The Story

Big Cypress Distillery was founded as a family affair. Over the years, cousins Fernando and Mark and in-law Danny spent many a holiday together, sharing experiences over cold drinks. Inspired by today’s craft movement and a glass of whiskey, they reminisced about their nostalgic affinity for their hometown, Miami, Florida. Each had stories to tell about the Miami they grew up in, from the Florida Everglades to the streets of South Beach, and many of the bars in between. On one accession, the question was asked: “why don’t we have more distilleries in Miami?”

 

And so we began, with a self-taught distiller, economic blinders, and an abundance of determination, to found Big Cypress Distillery, in order to can craft a broad range of spirits that our city can be proud of. The “proof” is in our spirits.

Danny is an Entrepreneur who partners with different people from all walks of life to find solutions to challenging problems. As a proud US Veteran, comfortable in overcoming odds to drive success, his belief lies in challenging the “Norm”. It’s what drives him to find solutions to problems that look hopeless. With a knack for turning projects into successful endeavors he has set his sights on his passion project, Big Cypress Distillery. He spent over 10 years in Federal Government consulting, helping bridge gaps between the private and public sector. After successfully navigating relationships with different people, places, and cultures, Danny has truly mastered what it takes to connect with authenticity. Never one to mince words, his relentless focus has garnered Big Cypress a very loyal following. Danny holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Webster University, a Master’s in Business Leadership from Georgetown University and a Bachelor in Human Resource Management from Park University. Like all Big Cypress Distillery employees, he also holds an honoree PHD in producing Great Booze

Mark Graham

Mark was born in Miami, grew up in the neighborhood of Kendall, and spent his high school years moshing at punk rock shows all around South Florida in the late 1990s and early 2000s. After a long time and a lot of school, Mark began his career as a tax attorney and spent time living and working in Chicago, IL and Washington, DC.

 

Mark moved home to Miami to raise and be near his family, which has allowed him to pursue an exciting opportunity to put his city on the map in the fast-growing and exciting world of craft distillation.

Fernando Plata

Fernando Plata is a proud U.S. Army veteran who served with the 82nd Airborne Division. Fernando has spent the last 24+ years as a software professional with a passion for quality spirits, especially American whiskeys, rums and gins.

 

Fernando is the head distiller at Big Cypress Distillery and while he respects American distilling traditions he is a true believer in innovation and a stickler for quality. He is focused on transparency, simplicity, and above all else continuous improvement.
